Currency
The currency in Poland is PLN – Polish Zloty. All major credit cards are widely accepted, though some small businesses and taxis will take cash payments, only. There are one or two ATMs located in the arrival hall of Gdansk airport and plenty throughout the city center. You can also find several money-changing boutiques in the downtown area that offer reasonable exchange rates (avoid money-changers at the airport). When using a foreign credit card, the card terminal or ATM may offer you the possibility of payment directly in your currency (EUR, GBP, USD). You will usually be slightly better off turning down the offer and going for the currency conversion offered by your home bank.
Getting in
BY PLANE. Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport is located 16km from the conference site with flights to many cities in Europe. The airport is well-communicated with the city center of Gdańsk and Gdynia (taxis, buses, shuttles, trains, car-hire options).
Reaching the conference site from the airport is easiest by official taxi (25-35 min ride depending on the traffic, 100 – 150 PLN fare) or by Uber of Volt (about 40 PLN).
You can also take bus 110 direction “Wrzeszcz PKP” or bus 122 direction “Sopot Kamienny Potok SKM”. For both buses get off the bus on stop “Potokowa”. It is a stop on request, you need to push a button. Then change to bus 227 direction “Jelitkowo” and get off at the last stop. From there, it is about 400m walk to the conference site.
The bus/tram fare is 6 PLN for the ticket valid 75 minutes. If you buy a paper ticket, you need to validate it immediately after you get in the first bus. Do not validate it again in the second bus unless your ticket has expired (check time). You can also plan your trip and buy your ticket via site https://jakdojade.pl/gdansk. The Jakdojade app is also available in Google Play store.
For more information for the planes, see the airport website.
BY TRAIN. The conference site is located 3.2km from the Gdańsk Oliwa railway station. Polish Railways (PKP) provide fast direct connections from Gdańsk Oliwa to all major Polish cities. For example, estimated travel time from/to Warsaw is around 3h. If you arrive by night and don’t know your way around the city, taking a taxi to the place you stay would be the best option. There is possibility to go by bus 117 or 143 from the Gdańsk Oliwa station to the conference site.
BY CAR. Travel time by car is 3-4h from Warsaw and 6h from Berlin. Two ferry connections operate to Sweden: every other day, Polferries has a ferry between Gdańsk and Nynashamn near Stockholm, and Stena Line operates three ferries a day between Gdynia (25km from Gdańsk) and Karlskrona.
